Known throughout the Detroit Metro area for offering family visioncare with one-stop shopping, Fortney Eyecare has grown from a single store established in Dearborn in 1955 into a six-unit chain that generates $4 million in annual sales. "We believe everything starts with a quality eye exam," said Bill Fortney, President of the company and son of company founder William Fortney, O.D. "That's why we have more extensive instrumentation for examinations than most of the big chains, and a larger dispensary." Many of Fortney Eyecare's patients are covered by managed care plans, and Bill Fortney believes the only way to excel in the managed care arena is to have superior service. "That's why we do everything in-house," he said. "We feel it's best if patients are examined in our office and work iwth our optician and our labs. Also, all our office managers and core doctors have been with us for over 10 years, and that provides consistency. It's one of our strengths."
