3 Tips For Protecting Your Glasses

We wear our glasses all day, but we don’t think much about the toll the day takes on our lenses.

You can’t always avoid having your glasses scratched or bent, but there are a lot of things you can do to preserve the clarity of your lenses and integrity of your frames.

Tip #1: Clean Your Glasses The Right Way

Our first instinct when we notice dusty or smudged lenses is to give them a quick wipe with our shirt. Don’t do it! Cleaning dry lenses with the wrong cloth simply grinds dirt and oils into them, leaving hairline scratches which soon cloud your vision. Instead, follow this guide:
  1. Rinse the dust and dirt off your lenses with warm water. You can use a drop of non-citrus dishwashing liquid if needed.
  2. Once your glasses are rinsed, only use microfiber lens cleaning cloths and lens cleaning solution. Other cleaning agents may dissolve the protective coating.

Don’t spit on your glasses to clean them. Aside from exposing your eyes to bacteria, the enzymes in saliva can eat away at anti-scratch lens coating.

Tip #2: If They’re Not On Your Face...

Glasses get sat on, knocked off nightstands, and dropped. The best thing you can do to protect them is to keep one simple rule--if they’re not on your face, keep them in a case! If you don’t have a case handy, be mindful of where you leave your glasses. Place them where they won’t get sat upon or swept to the floor.

Tip #3: Be Smart When Working Out

Wear a sports strap to keep your frames secure during physical activity. Better yet, wear an old backup pair. Sweat quickly dissolves some coatings on frames and lenses. If you frequently run or play sports, think about investing in a pair of activewear lenses. They have the comfort, protection, and toughness you’ll need.
Keep Your Glasses Looking New!

With proper care and a bit of precaution, your glasses can stay as clear and beautiful as the day you got them. To help with that, we’re proud to offer the latest in protective lens coatings. Ask us about them the next time you’re here for an appointment!

Thanks for choosing us as your support team for lifelong vision health. We appreciate you!

Great advice to know about cleaning the glasses with a microfiber cloth. This same tip has me thinking of the ones that my mom would give to my brother and I. It stuck to me ever since because of how we sometimes clean the glasses with a paper towel.

Thanks for mentioning that when you aren't wearing glasses, you should always put them in a case. They are pretty fragile, so you want to protect them from damage as best as you can. I am going to be getting glasses for the first time soon, and I want to know how to take proper care of them. These tips should really help me maintain them, thanks a lot!

Thank you so much for talking about the importance of only sing microfiber clothes to clean your glasses with. I can see that doing this can help you make sure you don't scratch the delicate materials of your eye wear and protect your investment. I need to go to the doctor since my vision has been bugging me lately and wanted to make sure I knew how to take care of glasses if I get them.

It's great that this article mentions how you can grind dirt and oil into eyeglasses if you use the wrong cloth. Choosing the right tools to care for them would probably be important to keep them in good condition so that you can see. When you purchase your eyeglasses, you'd probably want to get the right accessories as well, such as a cleaning cloth or carrying case, in order to protect them and make sure you can keep them in good condition.

You advice on using only microfiber cloths to clean your lenses is key. My son is getting his first pair of glasses this month and I will be sure to teach him this. The important thing is having some on hand always in case you need to clean them.

I had no idea that cleaning glasses with the wrong cloth may lead to the worse quality of vision! I've just had my eyes checked, and it turned out I need glasses. I will make sure to clean the lenses right away as I do not want to end up seeing almost anything in a couple of months.

Thanks for these tips for taking care of your glasses. I didn't know that there was an ideal way to clean these so that the protective coating isn't dissolved. It definitely sounds like it could be good to get in the habit of doing this especially if it can help your glasses stay in good condition.

Thank you for mentioning the proper way to clean glasses. I have fallen into the habit of just wiping them on whatever material is closest, and I've noticed that it is scratching them. I will invest in a microfiber cloth and make sure to only clean them with one of those.

It sure was informative when you said that spitting on the glasses will not only expose the eyes to bacteria, the enzymes in the saliva can also damage the lens. I never knew it was that important until I came across this article. If that is the case, then I will mention this to my brother since he has a high risk of doing this. I will mention this to him just in case he needs a pair of glasses since he said that his vision is getting worse.

I appreciate your advice to not spit on your glasses to clean them because it damages lens coating. Finding the right eyeglasses is important, especially for those who suffer from severe vision impairments. My vision isn't the best as of late, so I'll make sure to contact an optometrist that can determine what type of glasses I could benefit from.

I had no idea that sweat dissolved the coatings from your glasses! It makes sense now why the sides of my glasses are coming apart a little bit. Sweat can't be avoided, but you can wear contacts or a backup pair of glasses when you know you'll be sweating. Then you can extend the life of your glasses quite a lot.

My daughter is complaining that her vision is blurry and her head is always aching. I'm planning to bring her into an eyeglass boutique, they usually have a doctor-on-call that can check her. I am guessing that she needs to replace her eyeglasses with a higher grade. Thank you for pointing out that using a microfiber lens cleaning cloth and lens cleaning solution is the best way to clean it. Cheers!

My aunt has been thinking about getting some glasses because her eyes are getting progressively worse and she doesn't know what to do about it. Getting some glasses from a professional could be really useful and allow her to see better and function as she normally does. I'll be sure to tell her about how glasses should be cleaned with a dishwasher soap and warm water and should be cleaned with a lens cleaning solution.

It was interesting to me when you mentioned that you should only use a microfiber cloth when cleaning your glasses. As far as I know, many glasses have special films for preventing glare and filtering blue light. Using a soft cloth makes sense because you wouldn't want to scratch these delicate films.
